- I had an idea to combine a lino cut body with a hand drawn head, and then apply a colour blend screen print effect to the head but mimic it digitally with a colour blend that I have scanned in from a previous project.
- These sketches where me trying to figure out how it could look on some of the characters, and also figure out what sections I will need to make out of lino.
- I decided to make a tester using the tiger - goat character.
Lino Printed Body...
- This is the finished lino print for the body, I really like how it has come out. I like the stripes and how the hooves are floating off the end of his legs.
- I think it creates a good tribal and characterful appearance that would work for the idea of a totem.
- I wanted to use a pencil line quality for the head outline, I wanted the outline to be drawn fairly loosely and gestured to contract against the quality of the lino print.
- I wanted the head to be drawn in this way to contrast against the bolder, solid angular shapes in the lino cut - I thought it could be an interesting combination of media.
- I repeated the head a few times until a got one I was happy with and felt would sit on the body right.
Colour Variations...
I scanned in the pencil sketch, blackened the outlines and filled it with a colour blend screen print effect from a previous project, I altered the hue and saturation to get some different colour variation.
- I like how the faces look, this is process is something that I have just discovered and continuing to experiment with how it can be used. I like how I can mimic the marbled effect onto new images using photoshop, its really useful for experiment like these.
I like how the combination of medias look - it is interesting, 2 print medias combined into the same figure. Although I quite like how it looks now - I feel that it could be difficult applying this to a background and into a scene, the mix of visual qualities could create a weirdly busy image. I think the lino quality would be more suitable for what i'm trying to do and would be more applicable to other things. After creating this design - it made me think that it could be hard to apply this combination consistently to the other characters. I think I would prefer too see them fully made out of lino. This character also has an annoyingly short neck - I need to give him a longer neck.
