Extended Practice - 'Wubadub' Event Flyer

BRIEF:
  • I was approached by 'Proper Sound' events and was asked too produce some illustrations to promote there upcoming event called 'Wubadub'.
  • The event was a dub night at blueberry hill studios in leeds, they wanted me to produce some of my character designs themed around dub culture, dancing and night outs.
  • I had a really short time limit for the drawings because the event was in 2 weeks and they needed enough time to promote it before hand.
  • Because of the time limit I decided to collaborate with a graphic designer who was running the event. I will focus on the character designs and then pass them onto him to use on the event flyers and banners.
  • I needed to produce illustrations to fit on a facebook event banner, and 2 sides of an A6 flyer. (Information side and artwork side). Which also be used for A3 posters.

DRAWINGS:

  • I needed too keep in mind that the designs will be going alongside writing so I composed characters in different arrangements leaving space to put the titles and information.

  • These are the final drawings I sent over to him to use for the event. With the designs needed to be finished and printed so quickly I had to send the pencil drawings over and let him edit the outlines on illustrator and finish the flyers himself. And I think he was eager too see how he could mess around with some of my designs.

Flyer:

  • These are the finished digital designs that where printed as flyers and posters, there is a colour variation of the line up side because it was giving different information about the event.
  • I found this collaboration project unusual to work on, it was interesting to see how somebody else would use my character design within a design. It was beneficial to see how working with another graphic designer could work within the industry. The project had a really quick turn around so I didn't have time to dwell on the finished aesthetic of the flyers, but my character designs had not been executed in the way I would have liked them.
  • The outlines have been manipulated/distorted too much on illustrator, and the colour scheme and application is way too inconsistent.
  • It has been good to realise other ways to collaborate in order to complete tasks, but I found this brief overall quite frustrating to see my work used in ways beyond my control - this is good for me to note in future when collaborating on projects - make sure I have full control over the finished aesthetic of my characters.
  • Although this didnt quite have a final aesthetic that I would have liked, I had some really good feedback from people who had seen the flyers. The clients said it worked well to promote the event and wanted to continue working with me for future projects - so overall the project had been a success for - good learning took place and also some good connections for future work. It also opened up some different areas I can apply my illustration too - hopefully I will get commission for some more event based illustrations.
