Brief:
I was contact by another event called 'Twisted Roots' in huddersfield. They wanted flyer designs similar to what I produced for 'wubadub'. They wanted to pay me for the full finished flyer designs (this time with no input from another designer!!). So I needed to think about applying my own typography. They gave me all the information I would need to include on the line up side of the flyer. The other side would just have artwork that includes their logo. They also asked me specifically if I could include their sound system within the drawing somewhere. And if I could do design 6 main characters to represent the different members of twisted roots - they wanted one guy with an afro and another with dread locks. and the colour scheme needed to purple, black and white.
- I had much more time to complete his flyer compared to the wubadub, so I wanted to make sure it was executed to a better standard.
Visual References:
- These are the images they sent over for me to include within the designs - A photograph of their sound system to incorporate within the artwork and also their logo for me to add digitally onto the finished flyer.
Sketches:
- I had a good idea how to compose the flyers after working on the wubadub flyer - I used a similar structure for this flyer.
- I'm much happier with the designs for this flyer - more crafting went into the layout and arrangement of the characters to fit the composition properly.
Final Drawings
- I took more time outlining the final drawings, I wanted these flyers to have more of a raw hand generated feel to it, I didn't want the vectorised illustrator aesthetic of the last flyers.
Background:
- The flyer needed a texture in the background to stop it from having a flat linear appearance.
- I made a quick background using spray paints - I thought that spray paint drips and splats would suite the vibe of my designs well, rather than just using a pre set texture photoshop or something.
- I just did the background in the rough colours I needed because I could edit the colours digitally to get the exact tone and vibrancy that I wanted.
Refining Colour...
- I enhanced the colours of background and changed it too deeper purple and vibrant blue tones. I then filled in my character with similar matching tones and also made sections opaque - I liked how you could see parts of the background textures showing through within the characters.
Type Variations:
- I was really sceptical about working with the typography for the flyer as using text in this way was out of my comfort zone - I was tempted to draw my own type but I think I could have made the whole thing to overly hand generated and over complicated. I decided to use digital text to help enhance my illustrations - and also make the information much easier to read and understand.
- I used the dafont.com to choose a typeface, they had hundreds of different ones to choose from and it took me a while to choose a final one.
- I had initially wanted a graffiti style font to fit with the aesthetic but after experimenting with different ones, I found the simply blocky pac man style font worked really well with the aesthetic - readable but still characterful.
- I experimented with applying some colour to the typography - this just overcomplicated it and set it back into the rest of the design. It was much clearer and easier to read in black and white.
- I was pleasantly surprised with how I worked with text in this brief - I will definitely not shy away from working with typography in the future if I need to within different briefs.
Final Flyers:
Image Side
Line up side
- Im really pleased with the final flyers, I much prefer these to the previous 'wubadub' flyers.
- I like the consistent colour scheme on either side, and how it involves some spray paint texture and drips I feel like it suites my drawings and gives it a good overall appearance.
- The clients where really happy with it and will hopefully serve them well to promote their event.
