Animation Analysis - Study Task 4

Dabbla - Psychoville

  • I really like the animation for this music video. Its a really simple idea that has been done well.
  • It is called 'Psychoville', the idea and story is of a guy walking (probably into Psychoville), and as hes walking he get crazier and more psychotic, turning into the devil and then finally a skeleton.
  • It works well because the imagery is not overcomplicated, it uses the movements to set the pace and atmosphere.
  • The whole video is silhouette's of characters and objects made of black shape. This makes it easy to focus on the animating/movements.
  • It has the same colour pallet throughout, and lets you focus on what the character is doing (the actions) and works perfect to tell a small comical story. The red images that move in and out of the background help to tell the story and communicate the ideas.
  • The character stays in the same position on the screen in the whole video, his legs and arms just move to give the effect that he is walking. This is simple, comical and has a good gesture to it, it works well to set an instantly fast pace.
  • It works really well for a music video because it is very consistent (with the movements and imagery/aesthetic), and is then able to work with the beat really well, and build up the story around the music.

Rusko - Squark

  • I like this animation mainly for the funny expressions, that work with the sounds to create the effect.
  • I also like how the scenes change, and camera angles move/slide in time to the music. Its like movements mimic the sounds across the whole animation (the sounds set the pace).
  • Its interesting to see how little needs to be animated on the characters (birds) to give them a funny expression. The only thing that moves is the beaks and the tongue.
  • This shows how you don't always need to overcomplicate the movements. If you already have the content and appropriate imagery/drawings to work with, the actual animating can be very simple and straight forward.
  • Comparing this to the last animation (above), this animation relies on the imagery and character design and then uses less technical animation, where as 'Psychoville' has a really simple images and relies more on the movement and gestures of the animation.

E-volution - E sting

  • I was drawn to this animation because of the overall concept.
  • It relies on a combination of technical animation skills and technical drawing skills.
  • It works around a similar idea to the first animation with the walking effect, and the background panning across.
  • It shows the different stages of evolution, and the transitions between all the stages is really smooth. This involves well crafted drawings that match up and technical animation skills to get them moving and transforming at the right pace.
  • Its interesting to see how the sound track and the concept relate. The animation is a progression of something that changes and merges into something else. This reflects the sound track completely - the sound is a simple beat that gradually builds up and gets more complicated.
  • This sound track is so beneficial to the animation, it sets the right pace and also helps explain what is happening.
