Researching competition briefs
- The D&AD briefs seemed mainly graphic design and advertisement based, I wanted to find briefs that involved illustration and some kind of character design to make it beneficial to my practice. If I had to choose one of the briefs, 'Fur for animals' (Raising awarness about animal cruelty and buying fur products) seems like it would be the most interesting for me. Drawing animals is something I have been keen to try and develop so I think I could produce some solutions to this brief. The briefs in D&AD could be more appropriate for the collaboration brief because they involve multiple skills.
- The YCN briefs where much more appropriate for illustrators, the brief that stood out to me the most was the 'Roald Dahl Literary Estate'. Im a fan of Roald Dahls work and would love to have a go at creating his characters myself. It will also be beneficial to my practice as it involves purely character design. There are also rules and restrictions in the brief that will help me learn how to work my character designs around specific requirements.
I found some good briefs outside of YCN and D&AD:
- 'Decks For Change' is a skateboard competition based in Australia, The competition is to create a deck design that communicates an issue or shows a positive change within your community. I think this brief would be really good for me. It would give me a chance to see how my designs can work on a deck, skateboarding merchandise could be a potential route for my practice. It was also make me look at how I can communicate some sort of message within my illustrations, as well as applying it to a product within an industry that interests me.
- 'Secret 7' Is a brief where you create the artwork for 7 different vinyl sleeves, you get given 7 different tracks that you have to visual respond to as the artwork, you have to try and communicate the songs through your imagery but this can be done in any way you like in any media. I think this sounds interesting, Trying to communicate an entire song through a single image is an interesting task and could be approached very literally or abstractly.
- 'Loopdeloop' is an animation brief, you have to create a looping animation (like a giff) based around a specific theme... This years is CHICKEN. After working with animation in 505 and seeing how my prints could translate into moving image, this brief could be a fun one. Because it involves a mixture of illustration and animation this brief could be good one for collaborating on.
- 'The Libertine' A bar in Mytholmroyd (the town where I am from) asked me if I could design the interior of the bar. He wanted large scale illustrations that cover some of the walls in the bar. This brief/project will be really beneficial to my practice, it will show me how I can apply my spray-painting skills to a proper payed mural. And also lets me progress within a slightly different skill set to my paper based illustration, and see where my graffiti skills can potentially fit into the industry.
- 'Nottingham Post Design Competition' This is a very open brief and doesnt have specific themes or context. You simply have to submit any piece of your artwork you want, along side a picture of yourself and a short description of your self and your artwork. The idea is to show off your self as a creative person and submit a piece of art you a truly happy with and feel really communicates your individual practice. I like the look of this brief. It sounds fun and relaxed, it would be a good chance too enjoy painting a big piece of artwork.
- 'Illustration Friday' This is a weekly competition brief, where each week has a new single word theme that you have to respond too with an illustration/drawing. There will be a different winner for each theme every week. This brief appeals to me, I like the diversity and randomness of the themes and also having to respond to a single word is an interesting idea because it could be interpreted in so many ways. This could benefit my practice as a sort of illustration communication exercise.
