The Libertine - Interior Mural Design - Painting....
- I started by painting loose outlines of all the characters using the sketches as a rough guide.
- The walls where already painted plain black so worked perfect for a background.
- I had to masking tape up things like the cctv, plug sockets, and handles on the door so that they didn't get painted. I also bought a step ladder with me to make reaching all areas of walls easier.
- Im glad I spent time planning the composition before hand, I felt more comfortable and could just get going straight away. Often when im working large scale the design I have in mind alters and changes and then I make bits up as I go along to fill the space. But I think I judged the space well in my roughs, the composition filled the walls well.
- I didn't plan out where to put the colour, I find it easier to balance it out across the walls at the time.
- The same with most of the patterns, its easier to figure them out whilst i'm doing it. I just had rough idea of where they needed to go, like stripes all over the arms.
- I balance out the main colours red, yellow, light blue and dark blue evenly across the space, separating the different sections of the faces. Then use white for eyes and teeth and a few subtle highlights and stripes. The colour doesn't need to be perfectly neat around the edges because the black outlines will cover them up.
- One thing that was different from the roughs and the image he sent me, was how the edge of bar sticks out on too the left side. I had to change the arrangement of the characters slightly and make them lean over and fill the space at the top.
- Im glad I decided to tie the two corner walls together with the arm that reaches around it all. It contains all the characters, and works as a boarder around them all. And also works with the other wall both with arms reaching all over the place.
