Persons of note - Research

Persons of note:

Are task is to produce a series of illustrations in response to a 'person of note' that we have have been given. Our designs need to constantly communicate the characteristics of the person we choose.
The designs are going to be:
4 Stamps 50mm x 35mm
3 Postcards 105mm x 148mm
1 Poster 594mm x 420mm (A2)

The people I had been given are:
  • Valentina Tereshkova
  • Titus Salt
  • Sylvia Plath
Titus Salt:

  • Was born in Morley, Leeds.
  • Was a manufacturer and politician in bradford.
  • Is known for building a large textiles mill that is attached to the village of Saltaire.
Sylvia Plath:
  • American poet and story writer.
  • Was married to Ted Hughes a story writer who lived in Mytholmroyd (where I'm from!).
  • She died by suicide.
  • Books she wrote: The Bell Jar, Ariel, Crossing the Water.
  • She published here first book when she was 9 years old!
  • First time she saw Ted she bit his face with excitement.
  • Wrote a book of nonsense poems for children books.
Valentina Tereshkova:
  • First women to have flown in space.
  • She was selected from 400 hundred applicants.
  • The ship she drove was called "VOSOK 6".
  • It was on June 16th 1963.
  • She was Russian.
  • She orbited the earth 48 times! the flight was 70.8 hours long.
  • After her successful mission she was named 'Hero of the Soviet Union'.
  • In 2013 she offered to do a one way trip to mars if the opportunity arose.
  • One of the main purposes of the mission was to attempt the first docking manoeuvre with the space craft Vosok 6.

  • I did some studies of the type of space craft she was in 'VOSOK 6'. I really like the circular shape at the top. It has lots of interesting shapes to work with. The ship is a cool design and will be interesting to see what can be done with it.

  • This a Russian poster poster made for her expedition. I like the bold orange shape in the background. The composition is simple, bold and effective.

  • I found these artists work based on her. I like the characterisations of her. The orange space suite with white helmet with CCCP written across the top is a common characteristic.
  • I think looking at how I can characterise her myself will be a good starting point for the project.

  • I used basic womens facial features to represent a her face in the space helmet, I like it being simple. I think the fact that she is the first female astro naught means I don't really need it to look exactly like her - as long as it is female.

  • I experimented with different face types and space helmets.
  • I like the slightly angled view of the helmet it looks best and most characterful.
  • I experimented with adding quick colour with pencil. I want to include colour in my designs and I think orange suites her best and will help represent her character.

  • I came across this poster, I really like the atmosphere it creates with the composition.
  • The way the circle is floating and centred at the top has a really spacey effect.
  • I like how each item in the poster takes a circular form. It suites the theme of space loads and creates the right atmosphere and feeling.

  • This gave me loads of ideas to work with circular shapes in different compositions.
  • Her head in the helmet was already a circular shape to work with.
