City postcards - Hip Hop artists
Hip-Hop artists:
- I brainstormed some cities that have a popular Hip Hop scene, I came up with Brooklyn, Los Angles, London and Pittsburg.
- I then listed the different Artists from each of them and started to decide on who I would use.
- I started sketching Wiley from London, trying to capture some key features but his face was hard to capture and didn't look distinctively him. He would be a good person to do from London because he is well known from there, but I also need a good face with distinctive features to work with, so I will look at somebody else from London.
- Dr Dre from LA, I found his face much easier to capture. Something about his characteristic came through clearer in the sketches.
- I had a go at a continuos line representation of his face - this could have been interesting if filled with block colour and removed the outline?
- I took a bit more time on a sketch of his face, I then sectioned it up in a way that worked with the structures of his face.
- I filled in the sections with different bright colours. I really like how this looks. The bright contrasting colours that balance across the face work nicely.
- I also like the whole head shape, Id thought about making it cropped and filling the whole frame with just the face but this way it will make it easier to tell who it is.
- This design works well but I feel like it should look more like him.
- Biggie from Brooklyn, I really like the colour combination on this, I think the purples and yellow work well together. Contrasting colours is definitely effective and brings character to the designs rather than them just being accurate portraits of the artists.
- Mac Miller from Pittsburg. His face is quite unique and he always wears a hat so his face will be good to use and will be recognisable. I like this colour scheme it clashes and contrast but this the effect I want. I am also imagining what it would be like as a vector with sharper edges.
- Colour pencil is just a quick way I can explore some different colour combinations.
- Stormzy from London, I like this design the best, I really like black background and how the head shape fills the frame but is not cropped. The use of black on the face as well as the back ground look good and adds tone to the face.
- I don't think that Biggie fits as well with others, he is not a current rapper that is still making music. I decided to change it to Joey Badass also from Brooklyn. I feel this would suit the set better and they would all be modern rappers currently producing music and representing there cities.
- He also has a good characteristic like the afro and head band, they will work nicely as solid vector shapes.
- My designs are defiantly going somewhere, but the thing that could ruin them would be them not looking the artists. I think maybe looking at ways of tracing over photographs in a certain way could be more effective.
