City postcards - Final Designs

Making the finals:

  • I decided to experiment with light boxing over the top of photographs of them to get accurate proportions of their faces.
  • I didn't want to exactly copy them line for line, just the basic outlines. And add in some of my own shape to the faces.
  • I will then use the outlines as a guideline to make my vectors, so I will need to think about how the parts of the face will be explained with a closed shape.

  • I enjoyed the process and found myself sectioning up the faces and adding in angular shapes and lines, I split them up thinking about how the different colours will need to be placed.
  • I think the bottom 2 look better because they look more complicated, but I think they might translate different into vectors shapes, the simpler faces might be more effective.
  • Whilst tracing over them I had to make sure each part of the face was a closed shape so that I could trace all the lines have no gaps in between.

  • Im really pleased with how they translated from the line work, I think the process has worked well and gives a good abstracted version of their faces.
  • Looking at it now I think I could have pushed the characteristics of the line work even more in the traces and would have got more interesting and complex vector shapes.
  • But it think the bottom ones with more shapes work a lot better.
  • I think if I had spent more timing making my own interpretations of each face, rather than light boxing them, I could have got some interesting outcomes and would have looked more characterful.
  • Its shown me how working with vectors is a good way to get bold and clean looking outcomes. Its also good to see how a line drawing can translate into vector shapes and have a totally different effect.
  • For the bottom 2 I used Adobe colour CC to fine a nice contrasting colour scheme, with other shades of the colour. I think this was really helpful and it gave me a good ideas for colour combinations. They balance out better across the faces and look more contained.
  • I included more black on the top 2 and I feel it sets them back into the page a bit.
