Indigenous tribes

We where asked to explore a theme in our sketchbooks however we wanted. I chose the theme indigenous tribes because I wanted to explore some tribal ornamentation to try and apply it to some characters of my own. I started by finding interesting images to draw from reference.

I found the dangling earrings and tusks really interesting to draw. I tried to draw them accurately and with correct proportions. A soft pencil was a good way for me to get different tone and work into the lines to make them darker.

I drew the guy crouching to get a feel for some different body stances. I tried to use minimal gestured lines to understand the shapes of the figure.

My characters

I applied some of the tribal decoration I had looked at to some characters of my own. Im quite pleased with these, but I feel body proportions is some thing I need to improve on. The big exaggerated heads look quite cool for characters though.
