I got background information and interesting facts about the authors and looked at famous books they wrote. The authors that appealed to me most where:
- Aldous Huxley - Writer and Philosopher, 'The Doors of Perception' - recollection of a psychedelic mescaline experience.
- Franz Kafka - Novelist, Dark and surreal work, 'The Metamorphosis' - an man that turns into an insect.
- Cormac McCarthy - I was familiar to a few of his novels - The Road, and No Country For Old Men.
- William Burrows - American story writer, Ex herion addict, said to have created 'paranoid fiction' genre, wrote 'Junkie' a book about his experiences as a junkie.
- Niel Gaimen - Graphic novel and comic writer, he wrote Sandman, Sandman and Coraline.
Cormac McCarthy:
The main characters from The Road, the story is about a father and son that try and escape from a post apocalyptic world of cannibals.
Franz Kafka:
These quick sketches are trying to visualise the metamorphosis of a man and insect. I think the faces with combined human and insect features could make interesting iconic images.
Aldous Huxley:
After researching Huxley briefly I already found his character interesting and wanted to know more about his life. How he appeared a traditional story writer but enjoyed experimenting with psychedelic drugs and was so interested in things that could be achieved by using them. He stood out to me because his life and experiences as a whole where interesting and not just he work/stories.
I sketched some quick portraits of him and also tried out how the use of psychedelics could be visualised with shapes.
