Mask of Myself

Development

I sketched six mask designs that showed exaggerated facial features in a tribal/african style. I wanted the mask to have good structure with a sinister feel to it, so that it communicates my way of drawing.

I refined the sketches into two further designs. I then coloured them using drawing ink. I chose vibrant colours to give contrast against the traditional wooden colour of african masks. Also communicating my style of art.

Production:

I enlarged the small drawings using the colour photocopier. This made them an appropriate size for a mask. I was then able too experiment with different styles of outlines on the photocopies.

I experimented with a thick bold outline using acrylic paint. I didn't like how this looked. I felt it lost detail and structure, giving a flatter appearance.

I outlined this mask using sharpie, and fine liner for the thin lines. I was pleased with how this looked. It emphasised the structure of the mask and looked neat and crisp. I used the pens in a precise and angular way to achieve this.

I mounted the mask on black card and then cardboard to strengthan it and give a black boarder.

Final photographs

The composition of these photos work best with my mask.

This is my overall favourite photograph. It creates a suitable atmosphere for my mask.
